How To Find Your Mission In Life

At 36 I woke up.  Until then, my focus was on the drive to achieve success as a builder and investor. Then one question changed my focus. What do I want to be remembered for?

Maybe you haven’t really thought about this yet.

Look around and then look inside. The frantic pace of life and business leave many unexamined lives. Instead we need to learn to find our mission in life.  Once that mission in life is discovered a whole new focus will emerge. Do you know your personal mission in life? We all want our life to count.

In planning, the best place to begin is at the end. Imagine your funeral. What are people saying about you? You still have time to shape that conversation. If you don’t think about this question, it will cost you – for eternity. Picture your life like a dollar bill, how do you want to spend it?

God has designed us for purposes that are unique and meaningful. In the Bible the parable of the sower compares 4 different types of soil.  In Mathew 13:8 we read still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.

We all are designed to multiply for His glory.

This is the inspiration behind Bob Buford’s book Halftime Moving from Success to Significance. In Buford’s view, success is what you are focused on in the first half of your life. Significance is what you feel drawn to at the end of the first half looking forward.

The idea of the book is multiplication and giving back a hundred fold. Bob Buford believes the second half can be better than the first. Instead of settling for life as it is, you can prepare to embrace new challenges and opportunities.

Ten years ago, this book was the solution for me.  But I firmly believe the message is still relevant. It will help you find your personal mission statement.   It will help you identify what you have achieved and what you are passionate about.  If you’re young – get started early. Find out how you can guide your decisions now in areas towards your personal mission statement. If you’re my age…..(ok, maybe a little younger, I am certainly in the second half!)  you can think about your second half seriously.

As an entrepreneur, I want to be remembered for multiplying my efforts and giving back. For producing a 100 fold multiplying, or compound effect. I want to give back out of gratitude for salvation in Christ.  But you don’t have to be a Christian to benefit from this book. How can you leverage your time, talent and money to be of service to others?

Find out how to go from success to significance. It will help you find your personal mission statement, and what you want to be remembered for.

Find the one thing you were made to do, that no one else can do that you’re willing to spend our life on. Dare to believe that your second half will be more important than anything done in the first half.
