Turning Entertainment into Spiritual Education

Your family is precious. It is amazing to witness the passion and devotion that parents have for their children. Your spiritual growth as a family is your responsibility as a parent, are you passionate about it? I often wonder how to experience spiritual growth for my family. With over 400 hours of waking time, not spent at work each year, we all have a lot of spare time. But how do we make the most of it?

Learning and growing together as a family can be accomplished in ways that are enjoyable and maximize the use of your time with your children. Since 70 – 80% of people have a preference to oral learning, why not learn through listening? Sit back, relax and enjoy a fictional story that has a lot of wisdom to share.

King Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived said it this way:

He who walks with the wise grows wise.

Proverbs 13:20

Remember our rule of 5 – in five years you will only be as different as the people you meet and the books you read or listen to. Classic books help us become wise. A friend of mine reads books authored only by D.O.G.S (dead old guys). I like B.L.T.’s (big leaders in thought) and for me they can be dead or alive!

Clive Staples Lewis was a renowned scholar and author of more than 30 books including, Mere Christianity, The Chronicles of Narnia and The Screwtape Letters– a fictional correspondence between an old demon and his young apprentice.

Here’s why this is important: every family can experience spiritual growth and be entertained by listening to The Screwtape Letters. You don’t have to be a Christian to appreciate this book. C.S. Lewis is one of the most remarkable creative writers ever. The Screwtape Letters is one of his classic works. In it a demon named Screwtape writes 31 “letters” to his nephew Wormwood, on how to deceive humans. Insights in the fictional tale reveal Satan’s ways to seduce people into not believing in God.

The Screwtape Letters first appeared in the English newspaper Guardian during World War 2. In 1942 the letters were published in a book dedicated to Lewis’ friend J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings. The following year it appeared in the United States and has sold millions of copies.

Focus On The Family Radio Theatre created a version of The Screwtape Letters I think offers the best available version. It is available on CD and MP3. Here are 7 benefits of listening to this particular version:

  1. Change what you think about good and evil.
  2. Equips you to understand spiritual forces in the heavenly realms.
  3. Encourages a better life by becoming aware of the ways of the enemy.
  4. Wisdom to make better decisions.
  5. Confidence to overcome sin and temptation.
  6. Overcome fear. Gain security and peace of mind knowing what to expect.
  7. Teaches history of World War 2 and how the British thought.

My family has listened to this repeatedly and the boys don’t want to get out of the car at the end of a trip. Many other friends and families report similar insights gained. It changes the way you think and changes your life once you are aware of how much of life is a spiritual battle.
