It is commonly understood that when you make an investment you expect a return. Just like investing, giving has its returns…..or rewards. Does that surprise or offend you? Many of us believe that since “you can’t take it with you” our giving should be done with abandonment. Give it and forget it!
But what if we had a more intentional giving strategy, one with deeper convictions and greater consequences? If you are a Christian and believe in God and heaven, the rewards are for you. The Bible is full of instruction and examples of how our giving and stewardship in this life will be rewarded in heaven. Think of your giving as sending it ahead to be rewarded. Randy Alcorn, in The Law Of Rewards helps us understand how this is done. Don’t miss out on the best investment!
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
Matthew 6:20 NIV
Did you know that God designed us to respond to reward? Our giving can give God glory, help others, and reward us. Once we understand why we should give, our lives change. As God’s money managers, we are to invest His money in His Kingdom. Christians believe that we have been created for works specifically designed for each of us. God is keeping track of every cup of cold water we give to the needy in His name. That’s a powerful image that compels us to consider that the smallest of gestures on our part reap some great rewards. That’s what the Bible says…
He will reward each according to his works.
Mathew 16:27
A return of… “a hundred times”.
Matthew 19:29
Remember – this is not about salvation. You cannot earn your way to heaven.
But there is an account in Heaven, with deposits being made by you; not just rewards for the money you have given but also for the time, touch, deposits of relationships. It’s every little thing you do and how you treat others. As Stephen Covey points out in 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, begin with the end in mind. The end is your reward in Heaven.
The object of life is astoundingly simple: be rich towards God and store up treasure in Heaven for eternal rewards. We receive far more when we give than when we hold onto something.
‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ Acts 20:35
While our faith determines our eternal destination, our behavior determines our eternal rewards. The book unpacks and demonstrates from Biblical examples, that people will receive differing rewards in Heaven based on how we live, give and sacrifice here on earth.
